August 2016 Shop Meet-John Philips

It was a nice, rain free, but hot night.

Eight or nine people showed up, we knew about John’s “Garden of Eden”. He treated us to fresh pineapple and mango he had grown. When it’s fresh it’s like eating candy, so sweet. John had prepared a little demo on sharpening forstner bits using a Drimal tool with a small grinding wheel. He had a couple tools set up so we could try.IMG_2128

We then moved inside  where Fay had prepared desert haven, home made – mulberry pie, peach cake, chocolate chip cookies, and another cake I was just too full to even try.

It’s always fun to sit and talk with other members, something it’s hard too do at regular meetings.

August General Meeting – Larry Simmons – Hand Cut Mortise and Tennon

There were 31 members in attendance at the meeting and eight guests (Chris Duvall, Al Taricco, Geoff Geller, John Peasley, M. Dummett, Al Bibbero, Bryan O’Mchaney and Ryan O’Mchaney) for a total of 39 people in attendance.

President  John was home recouping from surgery so VP Joe Mannke took over and conducted the meeting.

This evening’s presentation was by Larry Simmons. He demonstrated how to hand cut mortise and tenon joints using hand tools. A few of the tools he used for this project were marking gauge, sharp pencil, small square, mortise chisel, carcass saw, marking knife, clamp, bench chisels and chisel hammer. Using the video to project the image of Larry’s demonstration on the big screen allowed the whole group to see how the mortise and tenon were made.

Next Month’s Meeting – September 14, 2016 at Advantage Lumber

August Demonstration meeting

This months meeting was at Craig and Mary Lou’s house in Nokomis. They have a beautiful house right on the water. Since the house is raised up to meet code, the whole ground floor is garage and shops, yes shops plural. There is the garden tool and irrigation repair shop, the woodworking shop, the paint shop, the down stairs office, and the wood storage room. The walls are covered with tool mainly on magnetic strips. There are a lot of stationary tools, table saw, band saws, joiner, planner, etc. Next we went up to the house and saw some of the furniture they have made and toured the house. They both like woodworking and work together on projects. Although it really wasn’t a demonstration type meeting, everyone was fascinated with the shop and house and really enjoyed themselves.
