Spring Picnic 2018

The 2018 picnic went off on time and most attendees ate too much by their own admission.

After the meal voting on the 2 x 4 entries occurred and each entrant was given a chance to talk about their entry.  The participants are asked to bring they projects to the next general meeting and present them for show and tell.

Entries are as follows:

Mike Swart whose entry also featured marbles running down a configurable ramp complete with a diverter and a marble loader.  Mike showed the effects of his new diet by spending most of the meal time setting up his marble run.

Terry Bair had an entry of an egret in a frame that he intends to display outside of his house.  The bird is removable in case another bird flies away with it.

Jim Basset made an end table with all curved pieces featuring a 56” radius on most pieces.

Andy DiLorenzo showed he had a nose for games by constructing a Jenga from a single 2 x 4.  He met the challenge of carrying the assembled balance game from the back table to the front demonstration table with knocking it over.  He said this is the adult version and whomever knocks it over has to buy the next round.

Greg Merrithew created a stained trophy with a hand carved hand holding the leftover wood from the 2 x 4.  He said the hand took many hours to carve, a new skill for him to learn and was complete with a knot in the place where a bruised fingernail would be!  He thought the trophy should go the first place winner on a rotating basis.

Pete Simpson said he spent hours following a truck around town to research his honey wagon.  Sometime research stinks.  His truck was made with power tools and hand carving.

John Philips showed an egret on a platform with hand carved grass.  He said there was no way to make the grass using power tools, and he remarked that sadly the egret’s  natural habitat was dry at this time of year.

Floyd Yoder made a plant stand, commenting that this was his forth attempt and the one that he finished. He used no nails, and had to use extensive clamps to keep the wood flat.  Any plant on this stand should be able to drink a lot since the stand has hollow legs.

Mike Dummett also made a table lamp, this one with a modern design flair.  The lamp shade was held in place with wood shapes he fashioned, and the shade itself was made from a piece of water color paper.

The winning entries are:

1st place was awarded to Dennis Daudelin who made a painted piece representative of music which included a keyboard, a horn, musical notes, and an ukulele.  Dennis said he had to study each instrument in order to portray it and noted that an ukulele has two pair of strings each pair having the same size.

2nd place was won by Fred Damianos for his lamp with a wooden shade.  Fred said he used milk paint and was careful with its application since the first time he used it, he had sanded it all off.  The paint add to his work.

3rd place went to  Neil McCullough   who made “Marble Land USA,” complete with a marble pump, a maze and amazing sound effects.
