President John opened the meeting at 7:00 on September 7 with 56 members and 5 guests guest present.
There were a few announcements before the program. As usual, visitors were asked to introduce themselves. Then, Al Brown described the ongoing mentoring program that has been established so members who have knowledge in a specific skill can help other members who want assistance in achieving that skill. Results of the responses from the sign up forms distributed last month were displayed showing considerable interest by the members. More forms were passed out for the people who were not at the August meeting.
There were some Woodworking books and magazines available to give away.
There will be not be a demo meeting month, but there will be a shop meet at Ed Columbo’s shop in Englewood on the 23rd at 7pm. Ed lives at 1872 Bayshore Dr.
We are looking for volunteer s for vice president next year. Anyone interested should contact John Peasley. It’s really true what they say “ The more active you are, the more you get out of it”
We had two presentations this month:
Bob Parrish showed a “dizzy” bowl at show and tell last month. Several members expressed interest in learning about how the bowl was created. Bob brought his Ringmaster machine and samples of various stages of his bowl, and gave a presentation on how he created these unique bowls.
He started with strips of wood 2” by 30” and glued them together on the 2’ side surface making a block that was 2” by 30” by however many strips you wanted to glue together.
He cuts these into a circle on his band saw.He then cuts the circle into layers and glues them together again. This time rotating each layer a little.
He then proceeded to show us how he used the Ringmaster and provided samples of the bowls he created.
The Ring Master mounts on his lathe and uses two small tools to cut rings off a disk at just the right angle so that when the rings are assembled and glued, they make a bowl that is so perfect it only needs a little sanding. Bob has modified his Ringmaster to cut at a nicer angle and has eliminated the need to drill a hole in the bottom for mounting.
Mario Fajardo, who received a $1,000 grant from the Club to attend woodworking classes gave a presentation of what he had experienced at the classes. He attended two classes, one at the Florida School of Woodwork in Tampa and the second at the South Florida Woodworking School in Miami. The class in Tampa was every day for 5 days and featured Randy Maxey, who was our speaker last month. The subject was Hand Planes, Saws, Chisels and their Sharpening as well as Principles of Good Carving and Joinery.
The class in Miami was on Box Making, the basic box, hinged top, and veneering.
Mario provided a slides of his experiences in both classes and recommended the school and the classes to other members.
I am trying to video all the meetings and post them on the web, for anyone who is unable to attend. The above pictures make more since when you can hear the talk that goes with them. I should have September’s video edited and available soon. I will send a link to everyone in an email when it is ready.
The treasurers gave his report. We added one new member last month, and 3 new ones this month. We now have 109 members.
