October 2020 Zoom Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 by president Tom Falcone following a half hour informal meeting period. There were 30 members in attendance.

First order of business, President Tom reminded members that club elections occur in November.  The club is in need of candidates. If you would like to serve, or to nominate someone, please communicate that to Tom Falcone at tfalcone@tampabay.rr.com. Voting will take place by e-mail.

Larry Simmons made three “shop meet” type videos since the last meeting.  Each will be used as a program for our Zoom meetings.  Today’s video will feature President Tom demonstrating how to turn bottle stoppers. If you would be interested in participating in a video at your shop, please contact Larry.

Tom’s video demonstrated the process of making a bottle stopper from raw wood to the application of the finish to complete the stopper. His presentation was followed by a brief discussion.

Show and Tell: There was strong participation this month with 12 members participating.

Barbara Brown – Barbara made a corn hole game complete with FWWC logos and a separate scoreboard and drink holder.

Barry Meyers – Barry showed a youth “Ducky stool” made for his grandchildren. He also showed Halloween ghost yard signs and Mickey & Minnie Mouse yard signs. The signs are constructed of ½ inch plywood and pinned to the ground with removable dowels inserted into the sign bottoms.

Fred Damianos –  Fred spent September constructing new work benches for his shop. He finished them with Crystalac, a strong floor finish he explained last month.

Greg Casagrande and Daryl DuPre – As a team they showed a video demonstrating the technique of patterned plywood using ½ inch Baltic birch. Strips were glued-up at a 45 degree angle and then re-sawn into strips. The strips could then be combined into slabs of varying widths and a variety of patterns to suit the project.

Daryl DuPrey – Daryl showed an amazingly intricate portable bar cabinet.  Among its features was an internal tambor drawer under which liquor bottles could be stored. I believe the woods used were Hawaiian Koa and Baltic birch. Daryl cheated by having a gorgeous model show his project.

Greg Casagrande – Greg made two triangular tables for his pool deck using ceramic tile for the tops.  The three legs were wood. This was a good repurpose of the tiles.

Joe Mathis – Joe made a version of “Big Foot” using the Intarsia technique with 6 different types of woods.

John Darovec – John made a “chip rack” to hold bags of chip snacks.  It is a narrow set of shelves filling the space between wall and refrigerator.

Marvin  Stolzfus– Marvin turned a bowl from a 4X14x14 block of cherry.  The top outer edge was concave and filled with a combination of sand and shells then covered with a lightly colored epoxy.  The bowl was finished in polyurethane.

Mike Swart – Mike made a river table at an Advantage Lumber class.  He finished it with a Rubio finish and hair pin legs.

Neil McCullough – Neil made a collection of bottle stoppers.  Several were made using multi-color plywood which yielded interesting colors and patterns.

Tim Sullivan – Tim made a book rack using cherry wood and brass connecting rods.  He also made several cheese boards in various patterns, several from cutoffs and scrap.

The meeting raffle was then conducted by Tom and Randy.  The winners were: Daryl Duprey, Gail McCullough, and Ed Columbo.

President Tom showed a pointing tool which he made and used in the video.

Then he adjourned the meeting.
