After the storm, we had a good turn out, with 27 people present. It doesn’t appear that any of our snow bird members have returned, but they will be back soon, as the weather up north turns cold. We had a special guest this month, the president of the St. Pete woodworker’s guild.
Announcements:
We are having a club Christmas party on December 14, our regular meeting night, at Marvin Stolzfus’s shop, 8400 Big Buck Lane, Sarasota. The club will supply the meat and beverage, everyone bring a dish. There is a sign up sheet going around at the meetings.
We are collecting hand made stuff from our members to donate to “Bowls of Hope” which has an event to support the food bank of Manatee County. The event is in November so this was the last chance to donate. Greg will deliver them.
The club is having a fund raiser in the form of a tool sale. It will be held on Saturday morning, November 19th at Pat’s shop. We are advertising it on Craig’s List, and FaceBook, to bring in some non members. Several people have donated tools to the club. They include a table saw, band saw, joiner, chop saw and many more. If you have some tools, you aren’t using anymore, bring them to the next November meeting, or contact Randy Cooper, who is heading this up, and he will help with arrangements.
Marvin Stolzfus is bringing back our monthly turner’s meeting. It will be at his shop, on the Monday following the regular monthly meeting. It started on October 17th. The next one will be on Monday, November 14th. Any one who has seen Marv’s work, knows he has a lot of ideas to share.
Our president bought a whole shop of premium tools a few months ago which he is selling off one by one. Among the tools he obtained are a bunch of woodworking DVDs, including many of the New Yankee Workshop shows. These DVDs will be in the club’s lending library.
Program:
Club member Barry Meyers presented “Making Trivets Using the Router: Lessons Learned”.
He showed pictures of how he selected, arranged, glued up, cut, and planned the pieces to make the trivets. He used a spiral upcut bit to route the pieces. Errors were made in production. He explained each and told how to avoid them. An important lesson was to not make cuts deeper than the width of the bit. Rather, make multiple passes. He circulated pieces of his mistakes for all to see.
The presentation was informative with good tips to avoid the mistakes he made. There is a video of the presentation, and it will be on the club website ( link below) along with the question and answer session that followed. Thank you Barry for an informative presentation and for not being afraid to share your mistakes with us.
