Return to In-Person Meetings
Alan Brown provided a summary of the Board’s discussion of this topic, much of which appeared in the recent issue of the Hardwood Herald. The likelihood of our returning to Advantage Lumber for our monthly meetings is very uncertain thus the decision to accept Pat Kerr’s offer. The Turners Club is also meeting there. Alan contacted the Turner’s president Alan Levine to inquire whether we might share the cost of internet service at Pat’s shop. The cost would be approximately $50 per month for each club. Our club will hold its first “live” meeting at Pat Kerr’s shop in July.
In a related announcement, members were reminded that Advantage Lumber is no longer extending a 10% discount to members
Program:
Tonight’s program was recorded by Larry Simmons. It was a turning demonstration by member Marvin Stolzfus who turned a miniature birdhouse. The demonstration was followed by a question-and-answer session.
Show and Tell:
Joe Mathis shared a lesson learned from using questionable wood. Joe had made more than 300 carving cuts and spent hundreds of hours carving an eagle figure on a slab when it collapsed. The Lesson: If you think your material might be bad, don’t use it.
Jerry Gibbs – a wooden box approximately 4×6. The box material was Australian beefwood, and the top was made using a tamarind maple.
Greg Merrithew – an ironing board table for use in ironing quilts. It contained a shelf and drawers below the ironing surface and was constructed from melamine.
Joe Mathis – a relief carving of shells.
Greg Casagrande – A grill stand constructed from salvaged wood and a recycled grill. He also made a pizza peel using walnut and cherrywood. Much of the work was done with a spoke shave
Marvin Stolzfus – A turned vase with a raised bird figure. The vase was turned, then the bird outlines were burned into the vase. A small plunge router was used to carve away the outer edges of the bird. Norfolk Island pine was used. The finish was lacquer.
Randy Cooper – Several items for children: a rocking horse, toy chest, toddler tower and a Pikler climbing triangle.
Larry Simmons – Recently acquired a used Incra fence for use with his table saw and router. It is capable of very precise measurements. He is learning to use it and has made a cedar box with dovetails and a filing tray with box joints.
Neil McCullough – made a Pikler climbing triangle and a balance beam. The balanced beam was constructed by curving several layers of thin plywood.
Dooor Prizes:
Tonight’s winners were Bob Catterfeld, Bud Smith and Greg _____. Each will receive a check for $25.
